Roger Tory Peterson

Until his death in the late 1990's, Roger Tory Peterson was one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide. He made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. Since the publication of "A Field Guide to the Birds" in 1934, Mr. Peterson has journeyed to Antarctica, the Bering Sea and the Andes Mountains in South America supporting the interests of wildlife and wildlife conservation. Mr. Peterson has won every major award for ornithology, natural science and conservation. He has been awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, as well as citations in other fields and nine honorary degrees.

The key to the success of the Peterson field guide series is the quick recognition system he uses. This system has been called the greatest invention since binoculars and the field guides are credited with helping to set the stage for the environmental movement.

I was first introduced to the Peterson field guide series in a college field biology course. Over the years, these field guides have become an indispensable resource while hiking through forests or watching the backyard bird feeder. These guides, especially "A Field Guide to the Birds", are highly recommended for anyone, novice to expert, whose interests lie in exploring the world around them.

Awards:

    Roger Tory Peterson

Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson by Elizabeth J. Rosenthal -
Roger Tory Peterson—the Renaissance man who taught Americans the joy of watching birds—also invented the modern field guide. His 1934 landmark Field Guide to the Birds was the first book designed to go outdoors and help people identify the elements of nature. This self-proclaimed “student of nature” combined spectacular writing with detailed illustrations to ultimately publish many other books, winning every possible award and medal for natural science, ornithology, and conservation.
Birdwatcher is a comprehensive, illustrated biography of Roger Tory Peterson--a hero in the conservation world--including interviews with friends, family, and protégés.

Peterson Field Guide to Feeder Birds of Eastern North America by Roger Tory Peterson, Noble Proctor - Slim and affordable, FEEDER BIRDS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA features Roger Tory Peterson's classic art in a larger format designed especially for the eighty million North Americans who watch and feed birds. This easy-to-use, at-a-glance guide simplifies identification by including only the birds that frequent feeders. And to make it even more convenient, the most commonly seen birds come first, followed by those that are harder to identify or that rarely visit feeders. Range maps, descriptions of birds and foods that attract them, and illustrations are on facing pages, so identification is fast and easy. The brand-new introduction covers important bird-feeding topics, including types of feeders and where to place them, birdbaths, kinds of food and when to feed, plantings that attract birds, and solutions to problems with squirrels and cats. A handy quick-reference list tells what kind of food each species prefers, and a feeder checklist provides a record of birds as they are seen.

Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague by James Fisher, Roger Tory Peterson -
On an April day in 1953, renowned American naturalist, author, and illustrator Roger Tory Peterson met his British friend James Fisher, an authority on seabirds, in Newfoundland. There they began a strenuous and thrilling hundred-day field trip around the edge of the continent. Part travelogue, part epic natural adventure, their richly illustrated record is "the superlatively good product of ideal circumstances" (Chicago Sunday Tribune).
In 1953 renowned American ornithologist and painter Roger Tory Peterson and British seabird specialist James Fisher undertook a whirlwind, 100-day tour of America's great wildlife refuges and corridors. This wonderful book recounts that sometimes madcap voyage, which took them to familiar places such as Long Island and the Smoky Mountains, but also to less traveled venues such as Big Bend and the then-remote Everglades. Along the way the authors document such things as the courting behavior of dragonflies and the arrival of the first cattle egrets in North America. This is a classic of nature writing and a great pleasure to read.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America by Roger Tory Peterson - Roger Tory Peterson had already made his mark with his innovative field guide when he conducted DDT research during World War II. His friend and fellow naturalist Rachel Carson built on these efforts and eventually wrote Silent Spring, a landmark text that, along with Peterson"s field guide, jump-started the modern environmental movement.
By combining the tireless observation of a scientist with the imaginative skills of an artist and writer, Peterson created a field guide that Robert Bateman, in his foreword to the fifth edition, says was the doorway for millions of people into the wonderland of natural history.
The Peterson Identification System has been used in the more than fifty books that make up the Peterson Field Guide series. Peterson"s magnum opus, now in its fifth edition, created the trail for countless field guides to follow. They are still following year by year, but his is the standard by which all other field guides are judged.
On the morning of July 28, 1996, Roger Peterson was painting his final bird plate. He died peacefully in his sleep later that day. It is fitting that his final work—a culmination of more than sixty years of observing, painting, and writing—should be this one, a revision of the guide that started his legacy.
